Professor Robert Walker

My photoRobert Walker gained his B. Mus (Hons.) and PhD in music from the Music Department, Kings College, London University, and performer’s diplomas from the Royal College of Music. Following posts as Director of Music in several Grammar schools and Special Music Schools in England he taught in universities in England and Canada where he was Professor of Music Education at both Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia. He is now on the staff at the University of New South Wales in the School of Music and Music Education. The author of 5 books, 4 chapters in books and over 65 research papers, his main areas of research and scholarly writings are in psycho-acoustics, auditory-visual perception particularly concerning music notations, culture and music education, aesthetics, and the theory of music education. Professor Walker was the Coordinator for the Arts Programmes and Chief Examiner for Music for the International Baccalaureate Organisation from 1987 - 1995. He was editor of the Canadian Journal of Research in Music Education and the Canadian Music Educators Journal between 1986 and 1993 and associate editor of the British Journal of Voice as well as the Journal of Research Studies in Music Education. His papers have appeared in Perception and Psychophysics, Psychology of Music, Journal of Aesthetic Education, Journal of the International Society for Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, and many others. Currently he is the Chair of the Research Commission of the International Society for Music Education.
