Wilfried Gruhn is professor of music education and chair of music education programs at the State Academy of Music, Freiburg, Germany. His education includes music education, musicology, psychology and German Literature at the universities and music academies in Mainz and Saarbrucken (Germany), and PhD in musicology. Professor Gruhn has held positions as violinist in orchestras and chamber music ensembles, as music teacher at high schools and most recently, lecturer and professor of music education at music academies in Saarbrucken, Essen, and Freiburg. He is a member of several national and international societies for research and music education, co-editor of Musik und Unterricht and of a newly established online journal of music and music education (starting 1999), national representative of ISME and past president of the International Research Alliance of Institutes for Music Education RAIME). Professor Gruhn’s research areas are mainly related to music learning theory (brain research, neurobiology), early childhood education, music perception and cognition, contemporary music, semiotics, and the history of music education.
