About policies 
Policies establish the range of practices (activities) that are

  • Desirable 
  • Acceptable
  • Believed to be feasible

Thus policies may be part of the limitations on activities

 
Policies & values
Policies are ways of articulating how our purposes are to be achieved (agreed or approved) and they reflect our

  • Values: what is desirable
  • Purposes what is to be achieved
  • Practices: how it is to be achieved 
  • Beliefs: what is feasible

Most ‘policies’ are not documented (we all have ‘our’ policies)

Values -> Purposes -> Policies -> Practices -> Activities

 

Basic ideas about activities
People are purposeful, that is, we act to achieve our purposes

Most purposes can only be achieved by a complex set of tasks and activities
A task is usually made up of several activities and results in something

We judge the success of our activities and tasks by how well the results match our purposes.
People tend to organise and standardise their activities over time into  practices

People are motivated by their purposes, eg, building pyramids, 
disrupting others, teaching, administration....
 

About practices (processes)

Practices are processes we use often, usually because we organise our efforts as ‘processes’ to achieve our purposes.  Processes bring together

  • People
  • Tasks & activities
  • Resources (inc. technology & policies)
  • In time and place

Processes use resources and result in things, eg, events, experiences, waste….

 

Outputs and Outcomes
Outputs contribute to outcomes in people’s lives: changed capabilities, opportunities…
