Technology & Action Learning (see more about action
learning)
We apply technology to our activities by operating the devices in which the
technology is embedded.
- The operation of technology requires expert programmed knowledge (P) about the technology and how it works
-
The application of technology may require insightful questioning (Q)
into the situation in which technology is to be used (purposes, methods, implications...)
- Through insightful questioning (Q) it is often possible to extend our
programmed knowledge of technology (P)
-
Learning to use (operate and apply) technology: L = P + Q +A

- Learning what to do with technology is largely about the operation of devices
(P+A)
- Understanding technology requires knowledge and insight (P+Q).
- The skilled use of of technology requires insight into how the
technology works and 'hands on' experience . Users typically extend their capabilities
well beyond their received knowledge (P) by achieving insight into their experiences
using the technology (Q+A)
- At a higher level this can lead to application and even potential innovation using technology:
that is application and innovation require knowledge and insight and action
(P+Q+A)
Example: the chainsaw
- The operation and maintenance of a chainsaw requires expert knowledge (P) whereas
-
The use (application) of a chainsaw in a sensitive environment may require insight into the implications within and beyond the environment
-
L = P + Q + A
Another Example: the success of this project website will depend on
the author's
- knowledge (P) of various aspects of ICT (the web, webpage
software...) (P),
- insight (Q) into how the technology might be able to used to inform others
(Q) and
- action (A) to develop and maintain the website in the light of the
response of participants in the project
