Teaching Processes are those things undertaken by the teacher in order to promote and support learning by the students

 

Working from the basic pedagogy (to a greater or lesser extent) the teacher carries out the following processes. These may overlap

 

Establishing a working relationship: rapport & a sense of shared purposes and work together to 

  1. Achieve agreement on learning focus
  2. Check on prior learning
  3. Design Learning task (scaffold  learning activities)
  4. Undertake monitor and mediate activities & learning
  5. Check & evaluate learning
    • Learning achieved
    • Learning processes used
    • About self as learner
  6. Identify opportunities for transference of learning

For these processes to be successful they must integrate successfully with the learning being attempted by the student. 

 

In order for these teacher skills and teaching processes to be 'authentic' they must be meaningful to both teacher and learner as they engage in a collaborative endeavour that will result in learning.

 

Notions of Teaching and Learning

This leads to key notions of teaching and learning

(a)  Teaching as 

  • achieving a working relationship that enables the mediation
  • placing learning activities in the zone of proximal development (ZPD)
  • scaffolding learning activities and 
  • mediating of learning experiences

(b)  Learning as action learning made up of

  • learning activities
  • related to prior knowledge
  • generating meaningful experiences 
  • subjected to insightful questioning
  • resulting in learning

 

 

Iterative and overlapping

The steps and processes involved in teaching and learning have the overwhelming characteristics of being iterative and overlapping. This is likely to be one reason why a systems approach is rarely adopted in relation to education.
