Relationships and education

Educators commonly value relationships very highly. However it is common for this to mean relationships between people, eg, between colleagues, between teachers and students...

A broader view

While (working) relationships between people are very significant there are other relationships that impact on the success or otherwise of learners. In general terms these key relationships exist between

  • people, and/or
  • practices, and/or
  • structures, and/or
  • tools, and/or
  • information

Consider the placement of these relationships in the following (grossly simplified) model of 'schooling', remembering that 'all models are wrong but some are useful' (Bock)

Each element in the above model incorporates people, practices, structures, tools and information, which are in turn related to one or more of the same or different components in other elements. The model is inadequate in that it is oversimplified and subject to the impact of external factors (not shown). However it should be obvious that choosing to focus on any one or two elements is unlikely to be a successful improvement strategy.
