Proposal for Professional Learning (pilot: 2003)

Aim: To enhance the usefulness of ICT in each school through improved alignment of policy, provision and practice. 

 

Optional: Participation in this pilot will produce work that can be used as evidence to meet outcomes identified in the professional learning unit  Embedding Educational Technology in Teaching & Learning (Unit 5) and for principals the "Leadership" strand

Scope: Approximately 10 schools, selected by systems and recommended by the project team based upon base-line observations.

 

Basis: The proposed pilot professional development program is based on

  • observations made in some 30 classrooms and their twenty schools across Tasmania
  • an action research approach to improving an aspect of the use of ICT in the school, informed by 
  • a review and planning framework that identifies three levels within the school at which it is important to give consideration to 
    • the use of ICT
    • and factors that impact on the use of ICT in teaching and learning

Timetable for the Pilot Program (2003)

When

Activities

July - Sept  Identify participating schools (up to 10)
Aug - Sept Workshop   A member of the project team will conduct a half-day introductory workshop in each school for the school executive, participating teachers and possible a representative of the school system with the following objectives:

1. Introduce the action research and the proposed development strategy

2. Provide case studies which highlight possible winning and non-productive strategies and outcomes. 

3. Consider of the school's governance in relation to the use of ICT, participating class characteristics & activities, and the use of ICT in the school.

4. Identify specific opportunities for a limited action research project to inform the future use of ICT in the school. Strategies may focus on: 

Plan : Detailed activities with/by individual teachers and other staff members:

  • Assess current situation
  • Choose focus
  • Plan initiatives

Outcome: A scope for the school’s action research project for the following phases, including identification of the measures to be used. 

Sept - Oct Do : Schools implement their action plans
  • Measure present situation
  • Implement initiatives

Support: The Project team will provide ongoing advice and support by negotiation.  

At same time  Study (In schools): 
  • Take agreed measurements
  • Record observations and insights
  • Study results
  • Act in response to findings

Schools may wish to consider their initial ICT plans for 2004 in the light of their findings, new vision and consensus.

20 November  Share (Project participants) Joint workshop at Sir Raymond Ferrall Centre, Uni of Tasmania at Launceston, for school representatives (all welcome) to 
  • share findings
  • amend and refine the basis on which the action research has been based
  • draw out common 'policies' for future action
  • shape future research developments
Before end November Act  
  • Project team sends report of workshop back to schools for validation and dissemination of findings. 
  • Schools may wish to refine ICT plans for 2004 in the light of the combined action research report and (copy to the project team).
