Proposal for Learning Objects Pilot (Term 3: 2003)

Aim: To gain insights into

  • Teacher decision making in the selection of learning objects
  • Teacher preparation and planning in implementing the selected learning object(s)
  • Teacher scaffolding of student activities and mediation of student learning in association with learning objects
  • Student responses to learning objects
  • Sound teaching and learning practices
  • The design of effective learning objects


Scope: 8 classes selected by partner school systems 

  • one Grade 5 primary class and one Grade 9 science class in
  • each each school system (Department of Education and Catholic Eduction Office) in
  • each state (Tasmania and Victoria)
  • to trial one or more of several learning objects offered.
  • Telstra to offer home internet connection to families of students
  • University of Tasmania to provide computers to Tasmanian families if necessary

 

Basis: The proposed Learning Objects pilot will be based on observations made in the eight classrooms 

  • Teacher interviews (before, during and after the pilot): teachers who may also choose keep some reflective notes and to take part in some online discussions with colleagues
  • Collection of student data similar to that collected in in-class observations made in the rest of the research project.
  • Possible feedback from parents invited.

 


Timetable for the Pilot Program (2003)

Activities

August  School systems:  Identify participating schools and teachers 

Project Team: provide orientation for participants

eMagine: place objects in WebCT and make available to participating teachers
Teachers: select learning objects, make offers to families and plan & arrange implementation
September

October 

Do: Teachers and classes work through the learning objects that they select
Study (In schools): 'Record' observations and insights. 
20 November  Share Results (Project participants) Joint workshop at Sir Raymond Ferrall Centre, Uni of Tasmania at Launceston, for school representatives (all welcome) to share findings and to draw out common policies and practices for future action.
Before end November Act Project team sends report of workshop back to schools for validation and dissemination of findings. Schools may wish to refine ICT plans for 2004 in the light of the combined action research report and (copy to the project team).
