Is the use of a CLE just a developmental stage?
The Shirky article [1] is well worth the read. He touched on many dimensions of ICT in a social (Constructivist? Learning?) environment and he emphasised and illustrated the significance of notions such as - computer as door (rather than computer as box), and, - user as group (rather than users as individuals)
My original interest is in the arrangements in relation to ICT (devices, services, tools/applications, procedures, configurations...) would we include if we had to create a constructivist learning environment... I suspect that the answers will prove to be less about specific technologies and more about purposes, relationships, authority, communication...and the use of technology. Others have raised the CLE possibilities around robotics and GIS ...
My follow-up questions would be along the lines of... What is it about robotics and GIS that makes it easy(?), natural(?), necessary(?) to adopt a constructivist learning approach?
My intuition is that it may have something to do with the novelty, uncertainty, unfamiliarity, limited use thereof (at this stage), and resulting limited experience in these areas... Conventions have not yet arisen around teaching and learning practices associated with these particular technologies. There is limited information available and so the need to construct knowledge locally becomes explicit.
As this knowledge building proceeds and is codified - Will robotics and GIS simply become conventionally delivered programs in schools? - If not why not? - What can be drawn from the answers to these two questions to inform the use of constructivist approaches in more familiar areas?
The design and development of CLEs appear complicated at this stage of the discussion, but may well represent an important edge for educational development.
Is the use of CLEs is just a developmental stage where a number of participants need to draw on each other's knowledge and experience in order to achieve a shared outcome? As knowledge becomes more codified do the users tend to become individual users rather than members of a group using computers?
Thanks for taking the time to consider the issues.
