Every class is unique. It is made up of the individuals, each with his/her own concepts of learning and

The 3Ps model (Dunkin and Biddle) represents the class as an integrated system with three main components:

  • The factors prior to the operation of the class, those pertaining to the students and to the teaching context
  • The process factors relating to the operation of the class including teaching and learning practices (see also pedagogy)
  • Student achievement

Clearly there is the potential for issues and opportunities relating to ICT emerge in each component of the 3Ps model. As observed in the research to date, it is overly simplistic to believe that the use of ICT in class programs is simply a matter of what students do with computers in the classroom.

The initiatives arsing from the governance of the school needs to take into consideration  all the elements of the classes within the school. Indeed sound governance needs to be well informed of the current reality in classes and many of its strategic initiatives will be aimed at using ICT to improve one or more of the factors within each component of the model.

Teaching and learning processes are shaped by the student characteristics and the teaching context. The use of ICT in the teaching context is, in turn, shaped by

  • the school governance

  • the infrastructure available

  • the commitment and competence of staff

  • and the intended application (of ICT)

To a greater or lesser extent, all of these factors contribute to the activities that make up the teaching and learning processes.
