Welcome to the University of Tasmania’s Faculty of Education, a progressive school of education for prospective teachers, education researchers, practising educators and related professionals.
The Faculty of Education at UTAS is an active, research-led Faculty, responsive to the growing demands for educators in the broad Australian and world communities. With three regional campuses located in Hobart (Sandy Bay), Launceston (Newnham) and Cradle Coast (Burnie), we harness the natural advantages of our State and the University to offer a range of teaching and learning opportunities for our students.
It is an exciting time to connect with the Faculty of Education. From 2010 we are rolling out our new range of Bachelor of Education courses and our new Master of Teaching course for both primary and secondary school pre-service teachers. We have introduced a new non-teaching course titled the Bachelor of Physical Activity Studies which utilises the expertise from our Centre for Human Movement. We continually revise our postgraduate courses and have a strong Higher Degrees by Research program, including Honours, Master of Education (Research) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). More recently, we introduced a new Professional degree, the Doctor of Education (EdD) to meet the needs of the contemporary education environment to complement our suite of research higher degrees.
For more information on our courses please see ‘What course should I do?’.
We are fortunate to present to you a Faculty staffed by highly skilled professionals, many of whom have national and international reputation in their area of teaching and research. Many of the Faculty’s researchers are currently working on cutting edge research projects in areas including: Mathematics Education; Literacy Education; School Leadership; Education, Health and Well-Being; Rural & Regional Education; and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
In part, strength of the Faculty can be ascertained by viewing the eight books published by members of the Faculty in 2009 and the three active Australian Research Council projects currently being conducted.
The Faculty also houses three research centres, which include a team from the Australasian Bushfire Co-operative Research Centre who are working on a project titled “Enhancing emergency incident management team effectiveness” and is concerned with researching ways to improve communication and collaboration between operators involved in Incident Management Teams. We co-host the Australian Clearing House for Youth Studies, whose mission it is to contribute to the wellbeing of young people by providing comprehensive and up-to-date information about key issues and practices in the youth field for access by the community, and SiMERR Australia who work with rural and regional communities to achieve improved educational outcomes for all students in the areas of Science, ICT and Mathematics.
To find out more about our research please see our ‘Research’ page.
In the Faculty of Education, surrounded by Tasmania’s natural beauty, you will find energy, vitality, enthusiasm and excitement about the future. We seek students who share these qualities to help us create that future together.
