Entry into the Graduate Certificate of Education (TESOL) or Masters of Education (TESOL) is available to graduates of any discipline, provided you can support your interest in this area through previous work experience, or a supporting statement.

Can I study TESOL off-campus?

Yes! Many of our students are currently teaching ESL in USA, Canada, Europe, Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, and Taiwan. We encourage independent learning (not conformity or academic slavery). Thus, students are encouraged to question accepted ideas and challenge academic authorities and experts. Fear and mental conformity should not be allowed to interfere with learning and teaching. Students need to search for ideas from various sources (including themselves as a key resource) to write their assignments in essays, reports, and reflective journals. They are encouraged to discuss their ideas with their lecturer gradually in the process of working out the meaningful direction of their assignments (not to be on the lecturer's right track in order to get good marks).

International students who wish to study our course in a country other than Australia should apply for the E0B Graduate Certificate of Education or the E0A Master of Education.

Can I study TESOL on-campus?

Yes! Mixed mode (e.g.face-to-face seminar, regular individual student-lecturer conferencing, e-learning) is offered to students based in Launceston. Please note that seminars are not mandatory to attend.

We have many international students who study on-campus. International students who wish to study our course in Australia must apply for the E7E Graduate Certificate of Education or the E5E Master of Education. We find that the intercultural experience enriches international student’s English language and learning skills as well as provide an opportunity for social interaction with Australian students and staff.

Am I given credit for my previous study?

If you have previously completed a relevant course in TESOL at another institution you may want to apply for advanced standing credit. In other words, you may be given credit for 1 or 2 (and occasionally 3) of our units and this depends on the nature and depth of your previous course. Thus instead of doing 8 units for the M.Ed, you need to undertake only 7 or 6 units if you are given credit for your previous formal studies at the postgraduate level. Those with CELTA will be given credit for 1 unit.

Credit is assessed with your original application for admission so please ensure you provide certified copies of certificates/transcripts as originals cannot be returned.

If credit has not been applied and you believe you have grounds for credit; please find the UTAS credit application http://www.postgrad.utas.edu.au/faqs.html

In this instance all applications for credit for advanced standing based on previous study or work experience should be directed to the Program Support Officer.

Students who choose to continue with their studies from the Graduate Certificate of Education and enter the Master of Education must re-apply for entry, however will automatically be credited the first 4 units of the Masters program.

How much does it cost?

Australian and New Zealand Citizens
Commonwealth supported places are available within the postgraduate coursework program to Australian and NZ Citizens through the HECS-HELP scheme (NZ citizens will be required to pay these fees upfront). For more information on fees or HECS-HELP please contact Student Administration on 1300 363 864, via email, Student.Admin@utas.edu.au, or visit the UTAS webpage http://www.studentcentre.utas.edu.au/fees/domestic/dom_unit_costs.html Alternatively you can refer to the Australian Governments website www.goingtouni.gov.au for more information.

What course code to I apply for?

Domestic Off-campus Students and International On-campus students
(On-campus option is not available to domestic students)
  • E5E-Graduate Certificate of Education
  • E7E-Master of Education
  • International students living overseas
  • E0A-Graduate Certificate of Education - Off-campus
  • E0B-Master of Education - Off-campus
  • As a distance-mode student, how isolated am I from the lecturer and other students?

Depending on how much interaction you want, email communication is the best way to stay in touch. Some students email the lecturer weekly, others "talk" when they want to discuss something. All emails will be answered promptly. Occasionally all students receive emails from their lecturer sharing information about their studies and activities, therefore it is important that you use your UTas webmail account regularly.

Assignments and assessments: How are they conducted?

First of all, there are NO tests or exams. Generally each unit requires you to complete assignments totalling 5000 words. There are various ways you can meet this requirement. The most important thing is that your assignments are based on your interest, personal experience, and resource availability. Try to relate your assignments to the unit; however this can be negotiated if your suggested topics are meaningful and beneficial to your learning and may not necessarily lie within the context of the unit.

If you attend a TESOL-related conference, it could be used for your assignment: writing a critical reflection or a report on topics which are of interest to you. You can also make use of the program that you have implemented. Please share your past and current experiences with your lecturer as discursive communication is an important part of learning.

It is hard to specify accurately the rate of success or failure in each unit at our university. However, a (wild) guess is something like this:

  • PP (Pass 50-59) generally it is a fine piece of work, most students tend to be in this category as their assignments just meet the prescribed criteria.

  • CR (Credit 60-69) A very good piece of work, normally about 25 percent of students in this category

  • DN (Distinction 70-79): outstanding, about 10% of students normally at this level

  • HD (High Distinction 80-100), exceptional outstanding, very few students achieve this.
  • Can I have a look at several assignments of former students in your course so that I have an idea about how assignments should be written?

Yes! A number of students have agreed to make their assignments available for other students to read. As a community or family of learners, it is important that we share. Please email your teacher.

If I have done more than half of the M.Ed course (which includes the four units of the Graduate Certificate), will I be granted the Graduate Certificate?

Unfortunately not. It is best to apply for admission into the GradCertEd in the first instance and when you have completed it you then apply to do the MEd course. You will then have 4 more units to complete to meet the degree requirements for the MEd.

If you are in the scenario where you are enrolled in the MEd course and have completed 4 units and need to exit the program with the GradCertEd please contact the Program Support Officer who will provide you with the steps necessary to make this possible.

How long does the course take?

    · Graduate Certificate in Education - Minimum 6 months, Maximum 2 years
    · Master of Education - Minimum 1 year, Maximum 3 years

The amount of time required to complete a program of study is dependent on factors such as the amount of time you can devote to study, the units that you are studying and the program in which you are enrolled. There is a general expectation of 10 hours/week/unit. If you are working as well as studying, it is recommended that you do not undertake any more than 2 x 12.5% units per Semester. Full-time enrolment is 4 x 12.5% units.

As a distance student, what access do I have to the Library?

Yes. Information on remote access to the library can be gained from the following website:

    http://www.utas.edu.au/library/libserv/rls/rls.html

The Flexible Library Service is a service offered by the Library to UTAS staff and students who are:

  • Living or undertaking practical placement more than 40km from the Launceston and Sandy Bay campuses during Semester or

  • Undertaking studies or working at the Cradle Coast Campus or

  • Registered with the University as a student with special needs due to a disability

  • As a distance student, how do I get my ID card?

If you are a new student you can obtain an ID card by sending a passport size photo of yourself, certified on the back that it is a true copy, along with your student identification number to the Student Centre, Private Bag 1345, Launceston TASMANIA 7250, Australia. Alternatively, you can email (using your UTas email account) a scanned copy of your passport sized photo along with another scanned copy of another form of photo ID (i.e. driver’s licence or passport) to Student.Centre@utas.edu.au If you were enrolled and received an ID card in 2008, your photo is stored on our ID system. We can automatically issue you with a 2009 ID card using your old image. If you wish to use this option please send an email (using your UTas email account) to Student.Centre@utas.edu.au requesting that an ID card be created and posted to you.

How do I access University email?

When you accept your offer on-line you will receive notification of your username and password within 48 hours. Students log on to webmail from URL: http://webmail.utas.edu.au/

It is important to regularly check your University email account. Messages from the University and the Faculty will be sent to this email address. If you prefer using an alternative email account you can arrange to forward emails by using the forward/vacation link in webmail.

I am currently undertaking M.Ed at the University of Tasmania but not a TESOL student, I would like to enrol in a couple of TESOL units, is it possible?

Yes, it is possible. However, it is important to take your background into consideration so that you don’t feel the pressure of undertaking a TESOL unit when you don’t have any TESOL background. The following units are the best for you: ESG721 Language and communication; ESG716 Language, culture and society.

If you wish to study units but do not want to count them towards an award (eg GradCertEd or MEd) please use the form “Non Award Application for Enrolment” from the webpage http://www.studentcentre.utas.edu.au/enrolments/forms_files/

How do I withdraw from units once I am enrolled?

All withdrawals must be managed via the eStudentCentre. http://www.utas.edu.au/students/index.html

It is important that students are aware of “Withdrawal Dates” as the date that you choose to withdraw may result in an academic penalty or financial liability. The census date for each unit will be listed in the Course and Unit Handbook. Please refer to the handbook to determine the exact date. www.utas.edu.au > courses and units

Students will be invoiced based on the census date period and the fees due date will be set for the unit on the Monday prior to the census date.

Students who withdraw after the census date due to special circumstances may apply for remission using the Domestic and International Remission Form and guidelines available from http://www.studentcentre.utas.edu.au/fees/forms_files/

International students are requested to contact their International Student Advisor for guidance.

How do I defer my studies or apply for leave of absence?

Domestic Leave of Absence forms and International Leave of Absence forms are available from the Student Centre forms directory; http://www.studentcentre.utas.edu.au/enrolments/forms_files/

International students may be granted up to one year leave of absence. A leave of absence may affect your student visa so it is necessary that you consult your International Student Advisor first.

Domestic students may also be granted up to one year leave of absence. Failure to complete a Leave of Absence and non-enrolment for 1 year requires that students re-apply for their position in the course.

When I graduate, what do I receive and what is in it?

Depending on which course you take, the formal qualifications include: GradCertEd and, MEd (coursework) and MEd (Honours). Words such as TESOL, distance, off-campus will NOT occur on your Certificate/Degree.

Your official academic records (which can be obtained from the Students Administration) will specify your TESOL units and the grades of assessment. If you require a formal letter stating that you specialise/d in TESOL, you will be provided with a letter confirming that your specialisation is TESOL.
