Course Structure
The TESOL postgraduate program consists of three courses:

1. E5E/E0B Graduate Certificate of Education Course (4 units) Minimum 6 months, Maximum 2 years
2. E7E/E0A Master of Education Coursework (8 units) Minimum 1 year, Maximum 3 years

The course code that you apply for depends on your citizenship and residence. The following acts as a guide.

Domestic Off-campus Students and International On-campus students
(On-campus option is not available to domestic students)
  • E5E-Graduate Certificate of Education

  • E7E-Master of Education


  • International students living overseas
  • E0A-Master of Education - Off-campus
  • E0B-Graduate Certificate of Education – Off-campus
  • The amount of time required to complete a program of study is dependent on factors such as the amount of time you can devote to study, the units that you are studying and the program in which you are enrolled. There is a general expectation of 10 hours/week/unit. If you are working as well as studying, it is recommended that you do not undertake any more than 2 x 12.5% units per Semester. Full-time enrolment is 4 x 12.5% units per semester.

    UNITS for TESOL specialisation

    There are 10 TESOL units for you to choose from. There is no recommended sequence/order. The order you choose should reflect your interest and pathway.

  • ESG714: Current Issues in Second Language Learning
  • ESG715: Aspects of Linguistics
  • ESG716: Language, Culture and Society
  • ESG717: Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language
  • ESG718: Curriculum and Syllabus in TESOL
  • ESG719: Curriculum Issues in TESOL
  • ESG720: Special Project in TESOL
  • ESG721: Language and Communication
  • ESG722: Language Learning for Specific Purposes
  • ESH723: TESOL in Practice
  • Important note: TESOL units are available for all Graduate Certificate and Master of Education students. If your specialisation is TESOL you must complete only TESOL units. If your specialisation is not TESOL and it is the general Master of Education strand, you may still complete TESOL units within your prescribed schedule.

    The University of Tasmania also offers the CELTA course (Cambridge Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults). This is not facilitated through the Faculty of Education. For Information please visit see http://www.international.utas.edu.au/ELC/static/TESOL/

    Students who have completed CELTA will receive 1 unit of credit towards their studies with the Postgraduate TESOL course.
