Information for Sessional Academic Staff

Congratulations on your appointment to the faculty and welcome to the sessional staff website. Sessional staff members are highly valued by the faculty as they contribute specialist expertise and diversity to academic programs. I hope your time in the faculty is fulfilling, stimulating and productive.

This website provides links to a range of information regarding working in the University of Tasmania. It also presents links to information regarding teaching and assessment in the Faculty of Education.

You may have been supplied with the Sessional Staff Information Guide when you first made contact with your unit co-ordinator. This guide will assist you in the beginning phases of you work with us and it details the processes of being issued with a staff card and gaining computer access.

The following information is arranged in sections detailing various topics. If you would like any further assistance or if you have suggestions to improve this site, please contact me by email: Robyn.Gladewright@utas.edu.au or by phone on extension 3298.

Office Space and Keys
Sessional staff members are provided with access to shared office space which includes a computer, some shelving and a filing cabinet. Your supervisor will contact the relevant person (Launceston: Faculty Executive Assistant, Poppy Fay, Cradle Coast: Services & Operations Manager, Mark Stemm ph 6430 4942. Hobart:  Peter Thompson, Business Manager, ph 6226 7668) to alert them to the need for office space and to apply for a key. On some campuses, you cannot apply for a key until your Staff Employee Number is available. The system varies in different campuses. In Launceston, you need to sign for and collect your key from the Security office which is located opposite the Co-op book shop between 11.00am - 12.00 noon. You will need identification to collect your keys. In Hobart you may collect your keys from the receptionist. Swipe cards for the video conference room can be requested from the same person who handles keys at your campus.

Parking
Sessional staff may park in the free parking area which is located at the far end of the car park in Launceston (free parking is very limited in Hobart) or sessional staff may park in the voucher parking area. Voucher parking is available for 30 cents per hour or $2.00 per day.

Stationery and Photocopying
The administration support officers at your campus will be able to help you with stationery, whiteboard markers etc. They will also give you an induction for the photocopier and fax. As a Faculty, we try to minimize the quantity of photocopying (to save paper and the planet). Please photocopy information using the double side function to reduce paper usage. Lecturers are encouraged to place materials for students on the MyLo site, rather than copying notes.

Getting paid
The Administrative Assistant, Mrs Kylie Tongs, will send you an Induction folder which contains Faculty and University information including details regarding your fortnightly pay periods. You will also receive a pay claim form on your Education email address. Please use this email account. Each fortnight, when you wish to claim pay, please complete and sign a pay claim form. If you have more than one contract, you need to fill in a separate pay claim form for each contract. The signed form may be sent in the internal mail, or faxed, to the Administrative Assistant, Mrs Kylie Tongs, fax: 6226 2569. If you take your pay claim from to the Education office, the admin support officer will show you how to fax it to Hobart.  If you fax the pay claim form you do not need to send the original by mail.  The pay claim forms need to be sent or faxed by mid day on Friday at the end of a pay fortnight. Pay claims received at this time will be paid on the Friday of the following week.

Sessional staff who wish to claim the full amount of their contract as a lump sum payment at the end of their employment are asked to contact the Pay Office (Launceston and Burnie: 6324 3537, Hobart 6226 2704) before submitting their claim form as there may be tax implications.

Marking in the Faculty
In the Faculty of Education, usually at least 40% of grades are Pass grades or below. This means that a Pass grade represents a reasonable level of achievement. High Distinctions are reserved for the top 10% or less of students. In some units you may not award this grade. It is unusual for more than 10% of a cohort to fail a unit. Marking needs to segregate student into levels of achievement.  This is worth considering when assignments are formulated. When you mark assignments, record the mark in your records but only provide a grade for students such as CR for Credit (CR - for a low credit or CR + for a high credit). The marks for each grade are: Pass = 50 to 59, Credit = 60 to 69, Distinction = 70 to 79, High Distinction = 80 to 100.
